Luke 7

What a beautiful story of love and humility is this when Mary comes to Jesus and breaks her precious alabaster box and pours its priceless contents of perfumed oils on Jesus’ tired and dusty feet! What a display of love and thankfulness as she is overcome with the realization of His forgiveness and unconditional love towards her, tears flood from her eyes so much so that they actually wash those beautiful feet! (For “how lovely are the feet of those who bring good news”) She doesn’t stop there. She takes her hair, which represents her glory and her best, and wipes those tear stained feet. Poor Simon, allowed his self-righteousness or pride to get the best of him and he thought his judgmental thoughts. Those thoughts brought rebuke from the One that loved him also. But, oh for those beautiful words that spilled from the mouth of our precious Jesus. Those words that stated clearly for all that could hear and, centuries later, read: She that has been forgiven much, loves much.

Some of you may be able to identify with this dear woman. You may have come from a similar life style or background and at times have felt that a Holy Jesus could surely not forgive or love or heal one as stained as you. But oh those beautiful words in Isaiah beckon us: Come let us reason together. Though your sins be like scarlet, they will be whiter than snow.

I pray that the scars that at times torment you with memories of your sins and failures will be instead reminders of the glorious forgiveness and love that lead you to be spoken of as Mary: She that has been forgiven much, loves much.

And what of you, dear girl, that God saw fit to save you when you were still an innocent child and to keep in His miraculous care that prevented you from walking in the path of Mary. Are you therefore doomed to a poverty of testimony and love? Are you supposed to always identify yourself more with Simon and that painful rebuke? Such questions have haunted many, for you are not alone. But the God of the Universe Who is able to keep you from falling and present you faultless before the throne is also able to reveal to you in your innermost being the Truth of Truths that you too have the exact potential for the deepest and vilest of sins as this woman. And that it was no doing of yours that kept you from falling; nor will it be your righteousness that He will use to present you faultless that day. (Jude 1:24) As you plead with Him to reveal this truth to your heart without perhaps the outward scars, He will do so; and with the revelation of the sin that lies within, may you experience that same depth of love and thankfulness and hear those longed for words from the Savior’s heart: She that has been forgiven much, loves much.
